Superstition tells us that Friday 13th is supposed to be a day full of misfortunate mishaps so some might say it was pretty daring hosting a bake off with the odds against us.
But at MVF we like to live on the edge.
There was nothing but the sweet scent of love, icing sugar and fierce competition in the air as our cookery champions took their Valentine’s themed bakes to the stand to await judgement from our panel of cake connoisseurs; Nick Belcher, Founder and Head of Consumer Offers, Amanda Nuttall, HR Director and Amy Catlow, Director of Publishing. The judging was based on taste and appearance, with a score out of ten for each.
This round of bake off did not disappoint with ten scrumptious entrees in the running, including Love Heart topped chocolate chip cookies, cherry chip cupcakes, and a fruit topped cheesecake, to name a few.
The winning bake came from HR’s Darrin Wood who placed second at our last Bonfire themed competition back in November. Darrin’s ‘A Slice of Passion’ comprised of a fluffy coconut and orange sponge cake finished with delectable passion fruit flavoured cream cheese icing. Darrin’s fusion of tropical flavours made his creation a firm favourite with both the judges and staff as his cake was sold out by lunch time!
Darrin comments on his victory: “I was absolutely thrilled to have won but also surprised as there were so many amazing cakes in the running! It was great to see that more or less everything had sold out by the end of the day and I think this will encourage more budding bakers to compete next time round!”
Darrin’s prize is the most prestigious of titles; MVF Bake off Champion. He gets to keep the glistening trophy perched on his desk until the next event.
Charlotte Edwards-May from Market Research bagged 2nd place with her beautiful coconut biscuit cake made with white and dark chocolate. Philippa Coleville scooped 3rd place with her vanilla sponge and orange cream cake with home-made raspberry ham, fresh blueberries topped with heart-shaped strawberry slices.
Our fabulous cakes made a whopping £300 which goes to Alne Hall, a Leonard Cheshire care home.
Jared Keleher, our CSR committee chairman comments on the success of the day: “It’s incredible to see how much baking talent we have at MVF – this round brought a whole new stream of contenders! A huge thank you must go to all the staff who dug deep into their pockets for such a great cause!”
